Guest Blog: Heed the Nudges

It's been six years and nine months TO THE DAY since either of us posted on this blog.

Is anyone still out there?

For over a year now, little tendrils of thought have been licking at the edges of my consciousness, nudging me to return to writing (guest writing, to be precise) for the blog.  A few months ago I finally allowed those thoughts to drift into the center of my consciousness, and determined to clear the first hurdle: getting Dallas to remember the password to his blog account.

This ballooned from a seemingly small task into a somewhat drawn-out ordeal, but ultimately the password was recovered and the blog account became accessible once again.  Did I take advantage of that?  Until today, I must confess that I did not.   So when I sat down in front of the computer to take this momentous first step to returning to semi-regular blogging, I was prepared, having faithfully  recorded the password on one of the cards in our old-fashioned rolodex.  I logged in at blogspot.com with Dallas's email address, fingers poised to enter that all-important password.

And then I discovered that the computer had done the hard work for me.  It had saved the password! How anticlimactic.  But it got me thinking....

How often do we postpone doing something we feel "nudged" to do?  Our first tentative steps forward may lead us to an obstacle, but instead of approaching it with an eye to problem-solving, we retreat.  Instead of moving forward, we may choose to seek a sympathetic audience, someone(s) who will entertain our vivid descriptions of the reasons why we are stuck, nodding appreciatively, but without challenging us to find a solution.  How often do we wait until the time is "just right," or until we "finish this one thing," until we "have a better handle on it," or until we "know them better," etc.?

It may be that if we boldly--or even tentatively--take a step forward, we will discover that the obstacle was a mirage.

Heed the nudges.
